शिव-ताल एवम् अचलेश्वर महादेव मंदिर
ब्रज क्षेत्र में बहुत से वन समाहित है! यह बात अलग है की अब यह कृष्ण कालीन वन अपना अस्तित्व एवम् महत्व खोते जा रहे हैं! इस वनों एवम् मंदिरो से जुड़े कुंड एवम् सरोवरों का भी अपना ही महत्व है! किसी समय, प्रत्येक मंदिर एवम् वन में कम -से-कम एक कुंड या सरोवर तो था ही! प्रत्येक धार्मिक स्थान का अपना एक कुंड अवश्य होता था! (दक्षिण के मंदिरों में अभी भी अपना एक कुंड अवश्य होता है, जिसे कल्याणी पुकारते हैं! )
शिव-ताल इन्ही बचे हुए कुंडों मे से एक है! चौकोर, हमेशा पानी से भरा रहने वाला, एवम् बहुत गहरा यह कुंड बहुत ही खूबसूरत है! यह संरक्षित कुंड मथुरा शहर में स्थित है! शिव-ताल एवम् कंकाली टीला आस-पास ही स्थित है! शिव-ताल प्रांगण में अचलेश्वर महादेव का मंदिर भी स्थित है! शिव-ताल के टीन तरफ उँची चारदीवारी एवम् निकास द्वार हैं! चौथी तरफ गायों के लिए गौ-घाट है! यहीं पर दो शिलालेख स्थापित हैं, एक संस्कृत में, दूसरा फ़ारसी में! इन शिलालेखों के द्वारा यह पता चलता है कि, बनारस के राजा श्री पाटनीमल ने सन १८०७ में इस कुंड का जीर्णोद्धार कराया था! राजा श्री पाटनीमल ने मथुरा में बहुत से मंदिरों का निर्माण एवम् जीर्णोद्धार कराया था! (दीर्घ विष्णु मंदिर, श्री कृष्ण जन्म-स्थान आदि). राजा श्री पाटनीमल का महल आज के नक्काराची टीला में था!
शिव-ताल की निर्माण-संयोजना एवम् स्थापत्य निष्पादन उत्कृष्ट है! राजा श्री पाटनीमल ने शायद उस समय के बहुत होनहार वास्तुकार को शिव-ताल की संयोजना की ज़िम्मेदारी दी होगी! बर्ज, बैठक, सीडीयाँ, सभी स्थान स्थापत्य कला के बेजोड़ उदाहरण है! आस-पास के लोग सुबह स्नान-ध्यान के लिए नियमित शिव-ताल आते थे! भान्दो महीने के कृष्ण-पक्ष के एकादशी को यहाँ वार्षिक मेला लगता था! इस मेले में अचलेषवर महादेव की विशेष पूजा अर्चना की जाती थी! आजकल ना भादों के कृष्णपक्ष के एकदशी पर कोई मेला लगता है, ना हि कोई विशेष पूजा अर्चना होती है! है। यह कुंड कुछ परिवारों द्वारा अतिक्रमण और निजी संपत्ति के रूप में उपयोग में लाया जाता है! मथुरा के नागरिकों को इस कुंड की महिमा और उसके मेला को वापस करने के लिए आगे आना चाहिए।
शिव-ताल के प्राचीन शिलालेख (संस्कृत) में उल्लेख का अनुवाद:
पुण्य भूमि मथुरा के पवित्र वातावरण में, देवताओं द्वारा सम्मानित, शिव के गण एवम् उपासकों का पवित्र स्थान, एक पवित्र स्थान है, जिनके गुण वराह पुराण में बताए गए हैं, पुरुषों द्वारा पूर्व जन्म में किए गए अच्छे कर्मों के प्रभाव के कारण,; सभी पवित्र स्थानों मे प्रमुख स्थान, विशेष गौरव के दाता: एक पारदर्शक झील, जिनकी प्रशंसा के लिए शब्द एवम् समय पर्याप्त ना होगा! राजा पाटनीमल द्वारा इस विशेष उपयोगी स्थान को चुना एवम् निर्माण के लिए बेहतरीन वास्तुकरों को लगया! इन वास्तुकरों के इस ताल की संरचना एवम् सुंदरता का विशेष ध्यान रखा! संवत १८६४ जेठ के शुक्ल पक्ष की दशमी को राजा पाटनीमल द्वारा भगवान की विशेष पूजा अर्चना की, ब्राह्मानो को दान किया और इस कुंड का लोकार्पण किया!
शिव-ताल के प्राचीन शिलालेख (फ़ारसी) में उल्लेख का अनुवाद:
वह वह है जिसे मदद के लिए कहा जाता है और जो लगातार पूजा करता है। मथुरा के पड़ोस में इस प्राचीन तीर्थ के प्रसिद्ध अवशेष, सभी छह तिमाहियों से तीर्थयात्रा की जगह अब नवीनीकृत हो गई है। जब शिव ताल की पुरानी इमारतों को उस उदार और भलाई करने वाले राजा द्वारा बहाल किया गया, अच्छे कर्मों का लक्ष्य, दुनिया के सभी लोगों के लिए सर्वोत्तम लाभ, सार्वजनिक आभार केंद्र, राजा पाटनीमल, बहादुर, उत्कृष्ट गुण संपन्न; तब पूरे विश्व की याद के लिए इसके निर्माण का वर्ष 1222 पाया गया था।

The design and execution are both of singular excellence and reflect the highest credit on the architect whom Raja employed; the sculptured arcades, which project far into the centre of the basin and break up the long flights of steps into three compartments on each side, being especially graceful. The place used to visit by a large number of bathers from the neighborhood every morning and it the scene of an annual mela held on the 11th of the dark fortnight of the month Bhadon. Outside the enclosure is a small temple in the same style of architecture dedicated to Mahadeva under the title of Achalesvar.
There is no mela held on Ekadashi of Krishna paksh of Bhadon now days. This Kund is encroached and treat as private property by few families. Citizen of Mathura must come forward to retore the glory of this kund and its mela.
Translation of detail on stone written in Sanskrit:
In the holy circuit of Mathura, reverenced by the gods, pure home of the votaries of Shiva, is a sacred place, whose virtue are told in Varaha Purana, inaccessible by men same through the efficacy of virtuous deeds performed in a previous state of existence; chief of all sacred places, giver of special graces: a pellucid lake, whose praises no length of time would suffice fully to tell. After a careful survey and employing the best of architects, who adorned it with tracery of varied design, the ceremony of its donation was performed by raja Patni Mall through the Brahmins, causing gladness like that which arises from the touch of the foot of Vishnu, rejoicing even the gods. In the year of the (4) oceans, the (6) members, the (8) elephants, and the (solitary) moon (that is Sambat 1864) on Friday, the 10th of the light fortnight of the month Jeth.
Translation of detail on stone written in Persian:
He is the one who is asked for help and who is constantly worshiped. The famous remains of this ancient shrine in the neighborhood of Mathura, the place of pilgrimage from all six quarters, have now been renewed. When the old buildings of the Shiva Taal were restored by that generous and benevolent founder, the goal of good deeds, the best over of benefits on all the people of the world, the centre of public gratitude, Raja Patni Mall, Bahadur, fountain of the excellent virtue; then the year of its construction for the remembrance of all the world was found to be 1222. Thought (or the poet Zaka) suggested the following tarikh according to the abjad reckoning [illegible] water of life.
