Ugly face of society – The situation of widows in Vrindavan

Mathura, city of Lord Krishna is known for pilgrimage, temples, education and sculpture. Krishna, lord of love & devotion resides in every particle of Brij. One who believe in Krishna wish to live with Him to feel His presence and to show one’s devotion to Him. Many of His follower Indian rulers and land lords built temples, dharmshala, education institutions in Brij region. They have given land to these temples & institution to manage these afterwards. Bhajanashram is one of the kind of public institution (attached to temple or mutt), where people offer their prayers to Lord in form of Bhajan & Satsang. Devotees of Krishna, who want to spend their life in Braj used to stay here until death. There are poor, widows and lower class of society people too, who are migrated from different region of India stay in Bhajanashram & Vidhwashram.

What is Bhajanashrams & how it run?
Bhajanasram are part of temple or mutt, where devotees offer their prayer to Lord in form Bhajan & Satsang. Usually these Bhajanashram were established by rich devotees in Brij region. These Bhajanashrams run based upon donation or temple income.

Why people join these Bhajanashram?
These bhajanashrams provide food & stay (not for all) to whom, who offer prayers (Bhajans) here. Poor, widows and abundant, who couldn’t find any place to live and couldn’t do any job for living join these bhajanashram.

Why people migrate to braj to stay in these Bhajanshrams? (mainly widows)
There is no good situation of widow in society and home particularly in Orissa, Bengal. Widow usually abundant from home and asked to stay in temple or mutt. They migrate to Brij and join these Bhajanashrams for living. Few of them do maid job, few start begging and few do pros job.

What is wrong, if they join Bhajanashrams?
Nothing wrong to offer prayer to Him; But problem occurs when they do not get food even after doing Bhajans for 12-16 hrs a day. It is fact that most of them get only one time meal, that to not sufficient. They are poor and have no source of income. Until death they are dependent on these ashrams. They are begging for food, clothe everything.

What government doing for these people?

Government has one plan ‘Widow Pension Scheme’, ‘Senior Citizen Pension Scheme’; these widows can get INR 400 per month under this scheme. But we all know about corruption in govt schemes. Merely 5-10% widows get benefited by these schemes that too partial.

The cruel, ugly & unsocial face
They came to braj to live & offer htier prayer to God until death and they do. But what happen after their death. Facts show the worst, cruel & unsocial face of society.
  • Their dead body abundant by ashram and kept in garbage for days.
  • Municipal sweeper CUT dead body into pieces and throw in to the Yamuna. [By the ways Government has a provision for unidentified bodies’ final cremation and give 1000 Rs too]
  • Some time if she lucky than full body throw in to the Yamuna.
  • These widows know their fate after death too and give most of his assets, whatever they have to municipal sweeper to do their final cremation when they are alive. [It is a kind of request or bribe to not to cut her body into pieces after death]
Does society or government not know about this situation?
Yes they know very well. When these widows were young that time they were serving as maid or pros or keep; but when they become old they abundant for their final & known fate.Few of sensible social people raised this situation to government & judiciary too. Government acted as expected and Judiciary formed committees for investigation.Media flashes this news until TRP downfall. Few NGOs raised this issue too.

Satyamev Jayate raised Vrindavan widows’ issue. It is good that people came to know about them. But how will it reflect? Will their fate change?
